At what point will people consider smokers a discriminated against group?
Today is the Great American Smokeout, and you may soon not be able to light up in Los Angeles apartment buildings built with city money. A city council committee gave preliminary approval yesterday to a proposal that would stipulate no smoking in at least half of all multi-family housing units built with city money. Health advocates jammed the meeting and no one spoke against the ban. The "Los Angeles Times" reports it's the idea of Council President Alex Padilla. Existing apartments would most likely be exempt and apartments that allow smoking will still be built. Officials say they just want to give nonsmokers the choice of smoke-free apartments. Officials say the ban could affect more than one thousand units each year.
Sometimes, I think the anti-smoking lobby would just like to string up anyone who's touched a cigerette. Thank goodness I don't smoke. I wouldn't want storm troopers busting into my apartment for lighting up after work.
