Count Me "Not Happy" About CBS Goof

I was talking with my girlfriend about this mess involving CBS, documents that may be forged, and Ben Barnes, and it's gotten me a little upset. Look, I am somewhat, I guess, happy that it makes George Bush look better, but I'm not happy. I'm actually very sad about this recent turn of events.

I am a newsie. I work in news. I've been a reporter. I still report if events come up.

This is bad news for me. How can MY credibility withstand this awful scandal?

Look, I work hard on a story. All my fellow news guys do. The guy I argue the most with regarding politics works harder than me to make sure that the stories we write are accurate. We've pulled stories with questions. WE WANT TO BE ACCURATE! It's how the vast majority of us in news do our jobs. CBS is killing us. "60 Minutes" was the pinnacle of our profession. I dreamed of working for them, running up and sticking a mike in some crooks face.

But that dream has been crushed. Killed in an instant of negligence.

So as so many in the blogosphere and around the country gloat about CBS and their colossal mistakes, I am not among them. I am the one wondering how MY credibility will survive this. I wonder how my friend's credibility will survive.

I wonder, will anyone believe anything I do anymore in news? I hope so, but my hope only goes so far.

I went to uni with a few people who went on to journalism, all but one ended up freelance unable to tolerate editorial policies. I know this sounds horrible but sometimes - to an outsider - it seems as if the media is just riddled with the kind of people my grandad used to call "pinko commie queers" :-(
