Finally someone in learning the right way to protest a law they don't like.
California Attorney General Bill Lockyer filed papers this afternoon with the state Supreme Court asking it to put an end to same sex marriages in San Francisco. The AG asked the Supreme Court to "move urgently on the matter" and asked them to restrain the City of San Francisco from issuing any more same sex marriage licenses until the issue is resolved. Lockyer, a Democrat, said he supports "equal legal rights for all people" but says it's his duty as the state's lawyer to defend the state's marriage protection law. California voters approved a proposition four years ago that defines marriage as a union between a man and woman. In the City of San Francisco's lawsuit against the state, it claims the equal protection clause of the state constitution supercedes the marriage protection act.
Hey A.G., What took ya so long?
"Finally someone in learning the right way to protest a law they don't like."
It's my understanding that this is precisely what Gavin Newsom wanted to happen - disobey the law and force the courts to decide whether the law is unconstitutional.
Of course, if the court says it IS unconstitutional, the new yell will be "judicial activism!"*
* which we all know is what people yell when the court doesn't go their way :)
