Cops Go Overboard

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police said Friday two officers have been disciplined and department policy changed following an investigation into the officers' use of a taser when arresting a 66-year-old grandmother who honked her car horn at a police cruiser.

Louise Jones was arrested in June on charges of misuse of a car horn on a city street, resisting arrest and intentionally inflicting bodily harm on an officer. Her husband, Fred Jones, 74, also was arrested and charged with interfering with an arrest.

Police said Louise Jones tussled with officers when they tried to give her a ticket for honking the horn. One of the officers used the taser, which is capable of issuing a 50,000-volt shock, to stun her. The officers said Fred Jones then came downstairs and jumped on one of the officers' backs.

I am now of the opinion that in order to become a policeman, you must obtain a four year degree from an accredited university. Let's get the idiots out of uniform, shall we?

I've stayed away from providing a lot on the Kerry war record debate, because it's kinda pointless- all it does is remind people Kerry went to Vietnam and Bush didn't- and poorly covered- the Cambodia fib just hasn't been noted by the big non-Fox news organizations. I was, however, struck by the fact that my local Borders refuses to put "Unfit for Command" out for purchase- it posted a flyer saying that it is the number one non-fiction seller but that patrons may "order" it rather than walk in and pick it off the table and purchase it immediately. You didn't have to put in a special order for "My Life."

Why can't book stores be diverse? It's not that hard to put both books out on the table. Playing politics in a book store is one of the pettiest things I've heard. I know, I know...it's happened for a long time. Yes, but it gets pettier everytime I hear another story.

I'm Back

I'm just catching up, and boy does Kerry get mad when someone points out discrepencies in his military record. I, just like President Bush, won't do that. I WILL, however, laugh at the folks who want Bush to disavow the 527 group supporting him. He actually has on many occasions. Scott McClellan has said as much on a daily basis. I agree that these groups should be disavowed...ALL OF THEM. Will Kerry disavow the 527s as well? As you can see from The Truth Laid Bear, Kerry is getting far more help from 527s than Bush is. Let's disavow all the groups O.K. Mr. Kerry? ......hello? Mr. Kerry?

Taking a "Sullivan"

It seems that vacations are now called "Sullivans", and I'm taking one. All this not working has been difficult and I need a break from my...um...break. I'll be back on Monday with lots of nuggets for all of you. Have a great week.

We Need People Licences

A little traveling advice: If you try to carry a metal object through security at O'Hare, the Transportation Security Administration employees who run the metal detectors and X-ray machines are going to notice.

If that object is a cigarette lighter, they're really going to notice.

And if that cigarette lighter is shaped like a gun . . . well, you're an idiot.

But people do try to bring lighters that look like guns through security checkpoints.

And they bring knives. And paintball guns. Even baseball bats.

In her two years working security at O'Hare International Airport, Norma Marcinek has seen them all. One traveler tried to board carrying a cane with a sword in it. Another tried to get through security wearing a belt buckle that had a knife hidden in it.

Look, this is not some arcane, obtuse rule. It's a biggie that everyone who flies on a plane, not only SHOULD know, but must go out of their way NOT TO KNOW IT! I'm starting to become in favor of not just confiscating the stuff, but arresting some of these morons.

The International Judo Federation (IJF) is to probe whether Iran's world judo champion Arash Miresmaeili deliberately failed to make the weight for his opening bout to avoid going up against his Israeli opponent, AFP reported.

"We are examining the case very, very seriously," IJF spokesman Michel Brousse told the news agency.

The IJF executive committee held a meeting on the case Sunday and will meet again on Monday, he said. "The IJF is very surprised that such an elite player could not manage to make his weight," Brousse said.

"Maybe he has a diet problem. Maybe he could have had some problems in preparation. We have to know more about it," he told AFP. "If a decision has to be made, a decision will be made." "Everyone is innocent until proven guilty, and we don't want to accuse anyone," the spokesman told AP.
By merely missing weight, Miresmaeili could claim that he had not ascribed a political motive to his actions and thus avoid any sanctions for his decision.

Iranian President Mohammad Khatami praised Iranian judo world champion Arash Miresmaeili on Sunday for refusing to compete against his Israeli rival in the Olympic judo tournament.Iran does not recognize Israel and bans any contact with the Jewish state.

"Here's the story about the Iranian judo champ who quit rather than face a Jew from Israel. And you'd think the IOC would say something about this, but then again they're the folks who actively fought against a memorial to the slain Israeli athletes of 1972 because the victims were Jew... er, because politics shouldn't be a part of the Games. Yeah, that sounds plausible. Just nobody point out that the IOC recognizes Palestine as a country and won't recognize Israel's capital in its official literature."

How do you alienate a whole bunch of people in a hurry? CNN has a way...

Miller Brewing is celebrating the "50th Anniversary of Rock 'n' Roll" with eight commemorative beer cans that feature Rolling Stone cover shots of Elvis Presley, Blondie and others.

What's missing, some say, is a black artist.

Robert Thompson, a professor of pop culture at Syracuse University, called the absence "beyond conspicuous," because black artists often are credited with inventing rock 'n' roll.

"It would be like doing a set of cans of six great Impressionist painters and not including any French people on it," he said. "It leaves out an enormous amount."

The promotion, which ties rock's anniversary to Presley's debut at Sun Studios, also depicts Alice Cooper, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard and Willie Nelson, as well as the guitars of Eric Clapton and Joe Walsh, on cans being issued this summer by the brewer and the magazine.

Quick! How many black artists can you name in thirty seconds that are better than Alice Cooper, Bon Jovi, or Def Leppard? After Little Richard, Michael Jackson, Otis Redding, Fats Domino, Chubby Checker, Arethea Franklin, James Brown, Ray Charles, and Chuck Berry I ran out of time...Maybe you can do better.

Hotel heiress Nicky Hilton married a New York money manager before dawn Sunday in an impromptu ceremony, according to court filings obtained by The Associated Press. Hilton, 20, married Todd Andrew Meister, 33, at the Las Vegas Wedding Chapel, according a Clark County marriage license. A woman who answered the phone at the chapel declined comment.

"Access Hollywood," which first reported the wedding, said older sister Paris Hilton and actress Bijou Phillips were present during the 2:30 a.m. ceremony.

The Hilton sisters were in town for a Stuff magazine party at the Palms Casino Resort, where they were joined by Meister and Nicole Ritchie for dinner late Saturday, resort owner George Maloof Jr. said.

Maloof, who confirmed the ceremony had taken place, said the couple gave no indication of their plans.

Unconfirmed reports say the couple's plans included dinner, breakfast, and an annulment.

U.S.A. Basketball

Am I the only one who is actively rooting against the U.S.A. Men's Basketball team? I mean I like Carmelo Anthony for obvious reasons. I like LeBron, Duncan, and a few others but I think a good drubbing at the Olympics might teach these guys how to play the game of basketball instead of five man one-on-one. I'd much rather watch games like that fantastic Argentina/Serbia game won by Argentina on a last second shot by Ginobli.

Basketball is a TEAM game, let's see the U.S.A. group play like it.
