An elementary school teacher in Aurora, Colorado has been charged with misdemeanor child abuse after allegedly wrapping a student's head in several layers of Scotch tape. A report in the "Rocky Mountain News" says an eleven-year-old student applied a small piece of tape to his own mouth after Doug Tisdale made a remark about being quiet in class. Then, Tisdale took it a step further by allegedly wrapping the child's head in tape and parading him up and down the school hallway. Tisdale removed the tape with a pair of scissors after two adults saw the child. Tisdale was placed on paid leave when the child's mother informed school officials of the incident. Tisdale could not be reached for comment, and the child's mother says she is satisfied with the way the school district is handling the situation.
At some point, teachers need to understand that touching any kid, or administering unorthodox punishments is nothing but trouble. I'd have that kid transcribing "War and Peace" after school for the next month. Educational and painful.
Interestingly, I was this guys roommate in undergraduate school, albeit for a decidedly short time. I think he had issues then, and am surprised that anyone would ever let him teach. Although I haven't spoken to him in almost 7 years, I'm not one bit surprised.
