Black Men Attacked in Queens Neighborhood

Three black men who ventured into a historically white neighborhood early Wednesday to steal a car were chased by a man with a baseball bat, police said. One man was beaten and suffered a fractured skull.

The attack happened several hours before dawn in the same section of the borough of Queens as an infamous 1986 beating of three black men whose car had broken down.

In Wednesday's attack, Nicholas Minucci, 21, was being charged with first-degree assault as a hate crime, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon, police Commissioner Ray Kelly said at a news conference.

The three blacks told investigators they had been looking for a car to steal when they entered the Howard Beach neighborhood. They told police a white man in an SUV passed them in the street, exchanged stares with them and then returned with two friends and a baseball bat before chasing them on foot.

Boy, if you didn't have the story, you would have thought that these guys were minding their own business when they were attacked. 

These guys were stealing cars.  That doesn't deserve the beating they got, but it certainly deserves to be in the headline, don't ya think?

Why Am I Not Surprised

Three of the 52 Americans held hostage for over a year in Iran say the Islamic Republic's president-elect played a major role in the 1979 seizure of the U.S. embassy in Tehran.  Mahmoud Ahmadinejad  (ah-mah-dih-nee-ZHAHD) was a 23-year-old university student at the time.  By almost all accounts, he also was a founding member of the radical student group that organized the storming of the compound and the subsequent 444-day hostage drama that followed.  In an interview with the "Washington Times," former American hostage and now-retired Army Colonel Charles Scott said Ahmadinejad "was one of the top two or three leaders" of the entire operation.  The 73-year-old went on to call the one-time mayor of Tehran-turned newly-elected president, quote, "a terrorist." 

Just another reason to keep a real close eye on Iran...like we needed another....

Oh God No!!!!

A group of Indiana card players has a plan to save a court house from being demolished.  The women, ranging in age from their early 70s to more than 90, plan to pose nude for a calendar to raise money for the Randolph County courthouse.  The members of a bridge club will have strategically placed miniature replicas of the 128-year-old building in front of them while being photographed.  The calendar is the idea of Larry Francer of Farmland, who collected signatures from more than four-thousand people asking county officials to reconsider tearing down the courthouse.  They decided to construct a new building on the site because it's costing too much to maintain the old one.

I'm sure they'll make all the money they need making vicious threats like this.

I Hope They Weren't "Noodling"

There's nothing "fishy" about this tale.  The World Wildlife Fund and the National Geographic Society said fishermen in northern Thailand have caught the biggest catfish on record.  The behemoth weighed in at 646 pounds -- the size of a grizzly bear.  The humungous catfish, which is also believed to be the largest freshwater fish ever found, was caught along the Mekong River, which is home to more species of massive fish than any river on Earth.  Environmentalists and government officials tried to negotiate the release of the fish so that it could continue its spawning migration, but a WWF Conservation Science Fellow said the fish died and was eaten in a remote village.

Nice catch.  I find it funny that enviromentalists and goverment officials want to take the fish, their food source, away from the villagers.  Who cares about people when you can save a big fish.

Wal-Marts Are A Good Thing

Sometimes it takes more than one Good Samaritan to help nab a robbery suspect.  Tara Smith was shopping for clothes at a Wal-Mart in Clayton, North Carolina when somebody snatched her purse from a shopping cart and ran.  That somebody was allegedly Terrence Trice, who probably didn't expect dozens of shoppers to chase after him.  Some of those in the hot pursuit were senior citizens and an off-duty lawman saw the chase unfolding and managed to arrest Tice.  Tice has bonded out of jail and claims he's innocent.

I have a picture of hordes of Hoverounds chasing after the robber like he didn't have a Capital One Card.

They Should Have Left Him There

Imagine finding a man in the toilet.  That's what a New Hampshire teen says happened to her.  The teen reported seeing a man's face in the toilet tank of a women's outhouse and called the Carroll County Sheriff's office.  Gary Moody was arrested and charged with criminal trespassing.  However, deputies say they treated him as if he was covered with hazardous material.  He was hosed off before they slapped the handcuffs on him.

I would have locked him in and let him sit there for a while covered in all that filth.  The sheriffs were too nice.

Worst News All Day

Edloe has passed away.  I'm very sad right now.  My condolences go out to Laurence.

Very Funny

A European watchdog says U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales should drop a subpoena against two American reporters refusing to reveal secret sources.  Earlier this week, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld an appeals court ruling to hold the reporters in contempt and have them jailed if they don't give up their sources.  A statement from the media freedom chief at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, said quote, "a journalist's right to freely access information and deal with sources in confidence is paramount for free reporting and discussion of public issues."  The case revolves around the leak of a covert CIA agent's name to the media.   In a letter to Gonzales, the chief said most states have laws allowing journalists to protect their sources, adding that the U.S. Congress is considering taking action on the matter.

I love it when a European organization tries to meddle in journalistic free speech rights in the U.S.  Europe has far more rules to stifle reporters than the U.S. does.  Ever try to cover a court case in England?  You can't release any details of a court case while the trial's going on.  That's just the tip of the iceberg.

Europe needs to clean their own house before lecturing us on ours...That goes for a lot of areas as well.

Logical Fallacy

Could medical science be eroding civil rights?  A University of Louisville professor says he fears that's becoming the case.  Law and medicine professor Mark Rothstein questions whether or not the expanding use of forensic DNA testing is worth the cost of civil liberties.  He says the use of DNA testing does not bode well for civil rights.  Rothstein's article, "Genetic Justice," appears in tomorrow's edition of the "New England Journal of Medicine."

I think this guy's crazy.  Your civil rights end when you violate someone else's.  If using DNA to find folks who are robbers and killers is a violation of civil rights, then we should stop trying to arrest people at all.

Indiana middle school principal Alice Mehaffey will not lose her job, despite what some say was her "bump and grind" talent show performance.   The "Muncie Star Press" reports that Mehaffey is staying on as chief of Selma Middle School in Selma even thought she wore very short shorts and handcuffs, was picked up by a male student and ripped the T-shirt off of a male student during songs by the "Village People."  Some in the community were upset over the incident but the school superintendent says Mehaffey will be punished but not fired.  Along with being principal, Mehaffey is also assistant superintendent of the school corporation.

Do we really want educators who think that this stuff is o.k. around our kids?  If you say yes, change the sex of the principal and tell me if you still think so.  She should have been fired.
