A Change!!!!

Sorry for the lack of posting, but there's a reason.  My days of reporting and journalism are coming to an end.  Today is the last day I'll be working at Metro Networks.  I have a new job as a high school athletic director.  A change to be certain.  Not only will I no longer be reporting on the Denver area, but I will also lose all the useless info I get everyday from the Metro wire service.

Needless to say things will have to change on this blog.

I'm not quitting, but I need to take a break to figure out where the blog goes from here. 

I will probably still post from time to time for the next few week, but my attention will be elsewhere. 

Just giving y'all a heads up.

If you have ideas, I'm certainly open to suggestions...

Sad For Kitties

Cats may love treats flavored with tuna and salmon, but cookies and ice cream they can live without.  The "Los Angeles Times" reports scientists have discovered that a sweet-taste receptor in cats is faulty and doesn't work.  Previous studies have shown that cats don't like sugar.  Researchers offered cats plain water and water flavored with sugar, and the felines drank equally from both.  Later studies at a zoo showed the same results for lions, leopards, tigers and jaguars.  The scientists theorize that cats' extreme carnivorous lifestyle makes it unnecessary to sense sugar.  That would allow mutations to add up in the sweet-taste receptor during the animal's evolution.  Veterinarian James Richards from Cornell University says a sweet receptor in cats would be like people, quote, "having a taste receptor for wood."  The study is in the journal "Public Library of Science Genetics."

I'd have to dispute this, the way little Graylynn takes to ice cream......

Crazy in Florida

Authorities in Florida believe one man is responsible for some very bizarre break-ins.  Lee County deputies say someone has been breaking into the homes of elderly women and tickling them while they slept.  In the first instance a 73-year-old woman woke up to find a naked stranger tickling her right foot.  She screamed and the guy ran off.  Then, a 79-year-old woman says she woke up the very next night to find a naked man laying on the floor next to her bed.  The woman called police and the suspect again disappeared.  Authorities say the incidents are part of a string of similar break-ins that have taken place over the last few weeks in the same general area.   

I'm not trying to make light of the situation, but it would seem that if you're gonna have a break in, a tickler would be the best kind to have.  Better than, say, a stabber or a shooter...

From Metro Networks...

A Michigan teen accused of videotaping three female classmates showing their breast will go to trial.  There were five students originally involved in the incident.  Two boys allegedly convinced three girls to bare their breasts last month in Hesperia High School's parking lot and all of them were suspended.  However, one of the boys is facing two felony counts for the tape that was intended to mimic the popular "Girls Gone Wild" videos.  The other kids involved are not facing charges.

I'm not sure that they should be singling out this teen one way or the other.  It seems to me, if they're gonna press charges, they should get both the boys for persuading the girls...or the girls for indecent exposure.  Getting just one boy for videotaping seems like a bit of a cop out.

Please Kiki, DON'T SIGN LATRELL!  I don't want a guy here who has a penchant for choking...coaches or otherwise.

London Bombing Go Local

This raised my eyebrows...

A Denver-born Muslim convert allegedly has a tie to the July 7 terrorist bombings in London.

The suspected mastermind of the London attacks is believed to have inspected an Oregon ranch where Denver native James Ujaama wanted to establish a terrorist training camp.

Very interesting...interesting because there was a number of people in the Denver community who outraged that Ujaama was "targeted" as being a terrorist.  It's always nice to see the cops proved correct, and the people "outraged" proved idiots.  I wonder if Mr. Ujaama has received any official visitors lately?

A London Overview

Metro Networks has written up an overview of everything that's gone on lately in London....

British police shot and killed a man in an underground London rail station today.  Sky news reports that the man was suspected of being one of the bombers from yesterday's failed attacks on the transit system. There has been no confirmation by police that the man in fact was one of the suspected bombers. Transport police have shut down two of London's underground lines and closed the Stockwell station, where the shooting occurred.  Police also have cordoned off all of the surrounding roads. 

At one point, police had also surrounded an East London mosque today after receiving a bomb threat.  Police say they had cordoned off the area as they conducted a search, but after finding no device the alert was called off.

Yesterday,  the city was shaken by four attempted bombings themeerily similar to the July 7th attacks that killed more than 50 people.  Four small, near-simultaneous blasts occurred at lunchtime and hit three underground subway trains and a double-decker bus.  The devices apparently did not detonate as they were intended to so authorities were able to gather evidence from the failed devices.  Police are examining the explosives for fingerprints or other clues to help point  to the bombers.  Security experts say it's unclear why the devices failed to explode properly. 

Some train passengers reported having encounters with the would-be bombers yesterday.  One west London train passenger heard a bang and saw a young man lying on the floor of one of the cars, lying on top of a backpack with smoke coming from it.  After a south London explosion, witnesses chased a suspect, but lost him.

A group claiming to be linked to al-Qaeda has posted a message on its website saying it was behind yesterday's failed attacks in London.  The statement by the Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades said the attack was a message to all European governments that they would not rest until all "infidel troops" leave Iraq.  It also said the attack was a warning to everyone who follows the policies of President Bush.  The statement did show up on major al-Qaeda websites, and  U.S. officials have said the link between the group and al-Qaeda is unclear.  In the past the group has claimed responsibility for other attacks, including the Madrid train bombings and the July 7th London bombings.  The claims have been discredited by security experts.

Crazy Days In London

British police have shot a suspected suicide bomber in an underground train station in south London.  Citing police sources, SKY TV reports that authorities shot the suspected bomber as he tried to board a train this morning.  Police are confirming a man has been shot at Stockwell Station but they have not confirmed he was a suicide bomber.  Transportation police say they have suspended service on two underground train lines and that the station at Stockwell had been closed.

I have to say, this is the best way for a "suicide" bomber to go....by himself.  Nice to see that the London cops are treating these folks how they should be treated...harshly.  And yes, they DID kill him...Here's the update...

A man shot by police at a London underground train station has died as a result of his wounds.  A police spokeswoman has confirmed the man's death, saying only that he had been shot and killed after being challenged by officers.  She would not comment on reports that the man was a suspected suicide bomber, and perhaps one of the attackers responsible for yesterday's series of small explosions on London's transit system.

Not A Bad Idea

Girls in Uganda may have their college tuition fees paid for by the government is they are virgins when they leave school.  A member of parliament is introducing the idea and says any girl in his district who abstains from sex can have their university fees paid for.  He says a medical exam to prove virginity will be needed for those who want to take part.  While he is also telling students to be responsible and asking parents to explain the disease and threats of having sex to their kids, the proposal will not be extended to young men.

An interesting solution to a terrible problem in Africa.  And I bet this will have a much greater impact than a bunch of self-important artists slapping each other on the back about how much they're "helping" Africa by singing on several stages.
